Introduction: respiratory distress syndrome (SDR) is one of the main causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality, that’s why it represents a significant medical issue. Due to the lack of updated national epidemiological data, this study aims to describe the hospital discharge rate (TEH) due to SDR in Chile between 2020 and 2023.
Materials and Methods: observational, descriptive and cross-sectional research. A descriptive analysis of TEH for SDR was conducted between 2020 and 2023 in Chile, based on sex, hospital stay duration. Data was obtained from DEIS and INE, then processed using Microsoft Excel. Ethical committee was not required.
Results: a total of 17.728 discharges were obtained, with an average rate of 380.000 per 100.000 inhabitants, higher in male sex (438.26). The average hospital stay was 19.05 days, with a notorious decrease in 2023 (18.35). In each study year, the average number of hospitalization days was higher for females (19.93) compared with males (18.45).
Discussion: no prior studies related SDR treatment to the other analyzed variables. The decrease in TEH in 2021 may reflect improved prenatal care, while its increase in 2022 could relate to the removal of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of the Omicron variant, which has been associated with preterm birth. The higher prevalence in males is consistent with the literature and suggests a delayed pulmonary maturation. The reduction in length of hospital stay in 2023 may be related to improved clinical protocols during the pandemic. A longer length of hospital stay in females differs from existing literature, suggesting the need to consider additional variables.
