Abstract

INTRODUCTION:

Viral meningitis is an infectious disease that causes inflammation of the meninges. Its causes of hospitalization include making etiological diagnosis, treating and preventing complications. The aim of the present study is to descriptively compare the hospital discharge rate (HDR) for viral meningitis between the years 2018-2021 in Chile.

MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Descriptive and cross-sectional study on HDR due to viral meningitis between the years 2018-2021 in Chile (n=1,337), according to sex, age group and days of stay. Data obtained from the Department of Health Statistics and Information, descriptive statistics and HDR calculation were performed. Ethics committee approval was not required.

RESULTS:

The lowest HDR between the years of study was in 2021 with 0.87/100,000 inhabitants. The male sex presented the highest HDR with 2.23/100,000 inhabitants. The age group with the highest HDR was 0-4 years with 6.65/100,000 inhabitants. The average hospital stay was 6.2 days and increased in extreme ages.

DISCUSSION:

The year 2021 decreases the HDR possibly due to the sanitary measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic period, which decreases viral circulation. The male sex obtained a higher HDR, probably due to higher immunosuppressive risk factors in this sex. The age group between 0-4 years presented higher HDR, possibly due to a less developed immunity. The number of days of hospital stay increased in extreme ages, possibly due to complications at these ages, secondary to comorbidities and immune decline. In conclusion, these findings may be useful to improve the care of patients with viral meningitis in Chile and to develop preventive strategies aimed at the groups at higher risk of hospitalization as evidenced in this study.
