Abstract

Abstracts:

Introduction: Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most frequent endocrine neoplasia, due to the lack of updated national data, we propose as objective to describe the hospital discharge rate (HDR) for thyroid cancer during the period 2020 to 2023 in Chile.

Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. We performed a descriptive analysis of HDR by TC in the total population during the period 2020 - 2023 in Chile, according to the variables sex, age and length of hospital stay. Data were collected from the Department of Statistics and Health Information and the National Institute of Statistics, and were processed using Microsoft Office Excel. No evaluation by an ethics committee was required.

Results: 18,216 cases were studied, determining a HDR of 24.64 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with a progressive increase during the period. There was a predominance of females and of the 45-64 age group. The average hospital stay was 3.01 days, being longer in the male sex.

Discussion: HDR during the period 2020-2023 registered a progressive increase. This could be caused by the COVID 19 pandemic generating delays in diagnosis. The predominance of the female sex and the range between 45 and 64 years of age could be determined by the increase in risk factors such as obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Finally, the greater hospital stay in men could be caused by late diagnosis. We were able to establish a risk pattern in accordance with the results obtained. This opens the debate on the relevance of early prevention strategies in men.
