Abstract

Introduction: Hypertensive kidney disease (HKD) involves a bidirectional correlation between high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease. Although there are studies in Chile on these pathologies separately, the lack of specific data on mortality due to HKD makes it difficult to understand its epidemiological impact. Objective: determine the mortality rate (MR) due to HKD as the basic cause in Chile between 2016 and 2023.

Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study on HKD as the basic cause of mortality in the period 2016-2023 in Chile according to sex, age, region and place of death. The data were obtained from the Department of Statistics and Health Information of Chile and the National Institute of Statistics. The data were processed using Microsoft Office Excel. It did not require evaluation by an ethics committee. No conflicts of interest are declared.

Results: A total of 6,171 deaths were recorded, with a MR of 6.02 per 100,000 inhabitants. It predominated in the female sex and in those over 80 years of age. The Arica and Parinacota region had the highest MR, being 10.61. 68.4% of deaths occurred at home.

Discussion: MR presented fluctuations during the study period without a clear pattern due to possible variations in diagnosis, treatment and control of arterial hypertension, as well as in the availability of health care, especially due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The higher rate in the Arica and Parinacota region could respond to overcrowding, causing less access to health. It is essential to continue conducting studies in this regard to emphasize the relevance and understanding of HKD.
