Abstract

Introduction: Emergency surgeries occur in patients with acute or decompensated chronic conditions that require immediate surgical intervention to prevent severe complications. To better understand their frequency and improve the allocation of public resources, this study aims to determine the ratio of emergency surgeries between 2017 and 2023 in Chile.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study examines the epidemiological distribution of emergency surgeries in Chile between 2017 and 2023, based on age and epidemiological week variables. Data were sourced from the Chilean Department of Health Statistics and Information, of the public health system, and the National Institute of Statistics. The data were processed in Microsoft Excel using descriptive analytics. Ethical committee of evaluation was not required.

Results: A total of 4,777,928 emergency surgeries were studied during the period, representing 0.42% of emergency care cases. The highest number of surgeries occurred in 2019. There was an increase in the proportion of cases requiring emergency surgical treatment among patients aged 15 to 64 years, as well as those presenting in the 10th epidemiological week and summer months.

Discussion: During the period, it was observed that only a small fraction of emergency cases required immediate surgery, reflecting their specialized nature in hyperacute management.. The higher frequency in the 15 to 64 age group may be related to these being the productive ages and a broad segment of the population. Based on this study, further research and analysis of this parameter are encouraged for future projects.
