Abstract

Introduction: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an inflammatory disorder of the female reproductive tract, which can cause salpingitis and oophoritis. In England it was estimated that in 2016, 33.6% of women between the ages of 35-44 had at least one episode of PID, and of these, 16.1% had salpingitis. The objective of this research is to describe the frequency of hospital discharge due to salpingitis/oophoritis in the period 2017-2020 in Chile. Materials and methods: Descriptive observational study, which included women with a hospital discharge diagnosis of salpingitis/oophoritis in the period 2017-2020 in Chile (n=6.382), data from the database of the health information and statistics department From Chile. Hospital discharge rates were calculated using data from the 2017 Chilean census. No ethics committee was required. Results: 64.6% (4.121) corresponded to women between the ages of 20-44, 33.3% (2.123) between the ages of 45-64 and 2.2% (138) between the ages of 15-19. 16% correspond to acute salpingitis/oophoritis, 17.3% to chronic cases, and 66.7% were not specified. The hospital discharge rate for salpingitis/oophoritis decreased between the years 2017-2020, from 27.6 to 19.4 per 100,000 women. Discussion: The cases studied are concentrated between the ages of 20-44, that is, women of reproductive age and sexually active. The decrease in the cases studied until 2020 is multifactorial, highlighting the confinement as a measure to stop the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the cases were not specified, possibly due to the diagnostic difficulty given the nonspecific symptoms of these pathologies. More research is needed to improve timely diagnosis.
