INTRODUCTION: Bipolar Affective Disorder (BAD) is characterized by mood fluctuations. Its poor prognosis is related to high rates of suicide and self-harming behavior. Only 38% of Chileans are diagnosed and receive adequate care. The objective is to calculate the hospital discharge rate (HES) for Bipolar Affective Disorder in the period 2018-2021 in Chile.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Descriptive cross-sectional observational study on hospital discharges due to TAB during the years 2018 - 2021 in Chile (n=10,323), according to sex, age group, average days of hospitalization and diagnostic classification. An ethics committee was not required.
RESULTS: A HES of 14.68 per 100,000 inhabitants was obtained. The HES of the period for females was 18.77 and for males it was 10.42. The age group of 20 - 44 years obtained the highest HES of 31.81. The diagnosis “Bipolar Affective Disorder, Unspecified” presents a higher percentage of hospitalization with 42.94% (4,433).
DISCUSSION: Various milestones, such as the health crisis, had repercussions on people's mental health. High HES in women can be associated with biological and social factors. The age group with the highest HES coincides with the age of debut of TAB. It is important to investigate the discharges reported with a diagnosis of unspecified BAD, probably associated with a lack of psychiatrists in the emergency room, errors in records, and not having a standardized system for diagnosing mental health pathologies.
