Review of the literature on strategies for the prevention of Monkeypox in Chile: New challenges
ABSTRACT
Introduction:
Monkeypox (Mpox) is an emerging zoonotic disease with demonstrated potential for global spread, affecting regions outside its endemic areas in Africa. In Chile, although there have been no endemic outbreaks, the presence of imported cases highlights the need for effective preventive measures to prevent its dissemination.
Results:
Second- and third-generation vaccines, initially developed to combat smallpox, have shown efficacy in preventing and mitigating the symptoms of Mpox. Active epidemiological surveillance and contact tracing are essential for the early identification of imported cases and the prevention of local transmission. Additionally, a shift in the mode of transmission of the virus has been observed, now predominantly associated with sexual contact, which requires adjustments in preventive strategies.
Discussion:
The experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated Chile's capacity to respond to health emergencies, which is encouraging for facing potential endemic outbreaks. Continuously adapting and updating public health policies, combined with effective vaccination and public education strategies, is essential for addressing any emerging threats posed by this virus. The findings of this review highlight the importance of a proactive and coordinated approach to the prevention and control of Mpox, thus ensuring the protection of public health in Chile.
