Abstract

Introduction: Diseases of the aorta are classified into acute aortic syndromes and aortic aneurysms. The overall mortality rate is 2.49 per 100,000 population for aortic dissection (AD) and aortic aneurysm (AA). Both conditions are associated with increased arterial pressure and/or abnormalities of the medial layer.

Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive, observational study on mortality analysis of AD and AA in Chile between 2018 and 2022, based on age group, sex, subclassification, and mortality rate (MR). Data were obtained from the Department of Statistics and Health Information. No ethics committee approval was required.

Results: A total of 2,412 deaths were analyzed, with 62.1% being males. 41.2% of the deaths occurred in the age group of 65-79 years, and 42.03% corresponded to the subclassification of AD (any part). The Metropolitan region accounted for 42.12% of the fatalities. The overall mortality rate for the period was 2.74.

Discussion: The number of deaths showed a slight decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020-2021, which is not consistent with the findings reported in the international literature, specifically a report from the United Kingdom. During this period, there were confinement measures, strain on the healthcare system, and increased perception of risk among the population when seeking medical care. The findings regarding sex and age group align with the literature, with males and the 65-79 age group having the highest number of deaths. This population group has a higher prevalence of comorbidities such as hypertension and atherosclerosis. The MR during the study period maintained a stable trend around the average, except for the years 2020 and 2021, where there was a slight decrease, which coincides with the international literature.
