Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the 3 cancers with highest incidence worldwide and a big health problem. Chile doesn’t have descriptive studies of hospitalization for BC and its development over the years. The objective is to describe and characterize the hospitalization for BC and its patients, from 2017 to 2020. Materials and methods: Ecological study of 33,372 hospitalized people for BC during 2017-2020. Data collected from the Department of Statistics and Information (DEIS). Results: An increase in hospitalizations for BC during 2017-2019, except in 2020 with a decrease of 17.5% compared to 2019 (7,279). The highest number of hospitalized patients is between 45-65. Elderly represent only 4% of hospitalized patients and are the group with the highest average hospitalization stay (5.5). Discussion: Decrease in hospitalization for BC in 2020 could be due to the impact produced by COVID-19, the restructuring of services and the population’s fear of going to health centers. Patients between 45-65 years of age are the most affected by this disease, it could be due to the fact that the mortality rate due BC in patients over 60 years of age increase exponentially compared to younger age groups. The higher average days of hospitalization in the elderly could be due to their vulnerability and physiological alterations. Despite the investigations and the measures to address the BC problem, these are still insufficient to achieve significant improvements, so it should still be considered as a priority.
