Abstract

BACKGROUND: The sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is defined as the death of a child under a year of age, whose postmortem evaluation and medical history do not reveal the cause. In Chile, the last reported incidence was 0.45 per 1,000 live births in 2009.

AIM: Carry out an epidemiological update of secondary deaths to SIDS in Chile between the years 1997 to 2017.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data was obtained from the National Institute of Statistics of Chile according to the ICD-10 R.95 code, corresponding to sudden infant death syndrome. The total number of deaths in Chile between 1997-2017 was evaluated according to demographic variables, and the annual mortality rate was calculated.

RESULTS: 1,728 SIDS deaths were reported, 57.58% of them affected men. A higher prevalence was identified in those children between 1 and 4 months (72.39%). The most affected region was the Metropolitan region (51.73%). The average age of the mothers was 24.2 ± 7.09 years and that of the fathers 30.2 ± 14.7 years. The national global mortality rate from SIDS was 0.34 per 1,000 live births, with a significant decrease in the period studied (p <0.001)

DISCUSSION: Although a constant downward trend was observed in the years studied, SIDS continues to be an important cause of infant death in Chile. New prevention and diagnosis strategies should be elaborated by multidisciplinary teams.
