INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease is a public health problem with high economic and quality of life costs, which brings with it high mortality . Among its main risk and causal factors are high blood presure and diabe-tes mellitus in Chile and the world. The impact of this disease as a cause of death in Chile is unknown, therefore the objective of this study is to calculate the mortality rate for chronic kidney disease in the adult Chilean popula-tion, between 1997 and 2017.
METHOD: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study with data obtained from the Department of Statis-tics and Health Information. We selected those cases that corresponded to chronic kidney disease by stages and renal disease of hypertensive cause or associated with diabetes mellitus, according to their ICD-10 codes. Total deaths were assessed by sex, age, year and region, and annual mortality rates were calculated.
RESULTS: A total of 41,707 deaths classified as chronic kidney disease were reported, with a higher prevalence in the group aged 65 to 95 years. The most frequently referred diagnostic code was that corresponding to unspeci-fied chronic kidney disease . The national mortality rate was 16.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, with a total increase of 111.2 percent in the years studied.
DISCUSSION: This study showed a considerable increase in the mortality rates due to chronic kidney disease over the years studied. The data obtained highlights the importance of generating new strategies intended to prevent and intervene early in the course of this disease in Chile and opens doors to further investigations.
