Abstract

Electronic cigarettes are devices that heat liquids in order to produce aerosoles that are inhaled by their user. Their use has increased progressively, since they have characteristics that can attract people who want to stop smoking conventional cigarettes or are looking for a more modern alternative to replace them. This has increased the importance of studying the effects of these devices on people’s health, since with the increase in their use, hospitalizations and deaths associated with them have also increased. The objective of this review is to describe the relationship between the use of electronic cigarettes and lung injury. To achieve this, a search was done in Pubmed and Google Scholar for articles written since 2017. The evidence found suggests that these devices are harmful for their user’s health and for people who inhale their vapors passively as well. Different mechanisms of lung injury and injury in other organs have been discovered, which usually manifest clinically as acute respiratory distress syndrome. Even though many studies have been done about the short term effects of electronic cigarettes on the body, the importance of future studies concerning the long term effect of these devices should not be understated.
