Introduction:
Cervical cancer (CaCu) stands as one of the primary malignancies among the female population. The aim of this study is to depict the hospital discharge rate (HDR) due to CaCu between the years 2019-2022 in Chile.
Materials and Methods:
A descriptive and cross-sectional study of the HDR for CaCu in Chile during the 2019-2022 period (n=7990). Data sourced from the Department of Statistics and Health Information of the Ministry of Health. Ethical committee approval was not required.
Results:
The HDR for the study period stood at 120.37 per 100,000 inhabitants, with the lowest HDR in the year 2020 at 26.51 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the highest HDR in the year 2019 at 34.89 per 100,000 inhabitants. The age group presenting the highest HDR is the 45-64 age bracket, with a rate of 139.01 per 100,000 inhabitants. The average length of hospital stay was 5.1 days.
Discussion:
The year with the highest HDR was 2019, and the year with the lowest HDR was 2020, which aligns with the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the resulting limitations on screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
The age group with the highest HDR is the 45-64 age bracket. This could be attributed to the initiation of Pap smear screening in Chile.
Regarding hospital stay days based on age group, the 20-44 age group exhibits the lowest count. This could be attributed to the lower prevalence of comorbidities in this group and the implementation of screening tests.
This kind of study is crucial for epidemiological characterization of this condition in Chile, enabling the evaluation of public policies developed to enhance the HDR for CaCu.
